Ten years after her mother's death, Tennie's reputation at her high school suffers a severe blow only days before the school's annual prom. The daily hardships of teenage life are further complicated by the fact that her father, Robert, a former advertising executive who has since rebuilt his company, is attempting to do the same with his connection with his daughter. Despite his therapist's advise, overeager Robert makes a concerted effort to become closer to Tennie by demonstrating his own kind of compassion. He enlists the assistance of Jack, a 19-year-old driver/intern who has recently been hired to learn more about his daughter's personal life. Being practically raised by her extended family, Tennie is intellectually inclined and mature for her age, and she has sympathy for others. She also has a sense of rebelliousness, despite being academically inclined and mature for her age. The moment Tennie becomes aware of the plot against her, she understands that the only way to win her father's attention is for her to persuade him to find a female friend for herself.
