To lose but not give up is a victory. This is how Alek, Sophy, and Rudy, three young friends, live their lives. Scouts and people who just finished high school in Warsaw had big plans for the future that fell apart in September 1939. They are growing up in a very dangerous time, so they have to choose between surviving at any cost or risking everything to fight for a free country. Boys who grew up in patriotic homes and learned the values of scouting decide to go to war. They become soldiers, and even though they all come close to dying, they can all live full lives.
