Thornton Wilder's second novel, The Bridge of San Luis Rey, was published to worldwide acclaim in 1927. It tells the story of several interconnected people who died when an Inca rope-fiber suspension bridge in Peru collapsed, as well as the events that led up to their being on the bridge. [A friar who witnessed the tragic accident then goes about inquiring into the lives of the victims, seeking some sort of cosmic answer to why each had to die. The novel was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1928.
