Novalee Nation is a 17-year-old Tennessee vagrant who is forced to mature quickly after her lover abandons her on the side of the road in Sequoyah, Oklahoma, and seeks safety in the friendly aisles of Wal-Mart. Within a short period of time, some quirky, benevolent people "adopt" Novalee and her young daughter, assisting them in defying the odds and establishing a new life.
