Atomic: Living in Dread and Promise

This month marks seventy years since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, which demonstrated the horrific destructive potential of the atomic bomb. The courageous documentary by Mark Cousins examines not only mortality in the atomic age, but also life. The documentary only makes use of archival footage and features a new musical score composed by the band Mogwai. It provides an impressionistic kaleidoscope of our nuclear times, including protest marches, Cold War sabre-rattling, Chernobyl, and Fukishima, as well as the sublime beauty of the atomic world and the ways in which x-rays and MRI scans have improved human lives. The nuclear age has been both a nightmare and a dreamy state all at the same time.
