Dolls

As its overarching motif, Dolls employs puppeteering — specifically, the kind of puppeteering practiced in Bunraku doll theater performances — with each section of the film beginning with a story provided by the puppets and their masters that is related to the action provided by the live characters on a thematic level. Matsumoto (Hidetoshi Nishijima) and Sawako (Miho Kanno), a young couple whose romance is going to be split apart by the former's parents, who have requested their son participate in an arranged marriage to his boss's daughter. He initially agrees, resulting in the unstable Sawako being taken to a psychiatric facility. He later changes his mind. When he abandons his new bride at the altar in order to save Sawako, he discovers that she is so incapable of caring for herself that she must be tied to him with a crimson rope for the rest of her life. The two are inextricably linked as they travel through Japan, encountering others along the way who have sacrificed love for other, more transitory joys such as fame, power, and money, as they have done.
