Original Cast Album: Company

The musical "Company" by Stephen Sondheim opened on Broadway in the spring of 1970. According to tradition, the cast recording is done on the first Sunday after opening night. D.A. Pennebaker, a now-famous documentary filmmaker, filmed the making of the original cast recording, including the back and forth between Sondheim and the actors and the dynamic of trying to record a live performance. Elaine Stritch's performance of "The Ladies Who Lunch" is the film's climax. The show ran on Broadway for two years and won six Tony Awards, including "Best Musical." The plan to make a series of movies called "Original Cast Album" never happened.
