Alexander, 11, lives in a commune with other kids, their mothers, and the charismatic leader, Gregori. The commune is on the edge of a crumbling city, and Alexander is one of the kids. He teaches them how to raise livestock, grow vegetables and work together as a group, as well as how to get rid of dead bodies. New baby brother worries Alexander, so he wonders if his father has too much power over the kids and how they learn to be killers. Gregori's behavior changes when the child he used to think of as a son doesn't want to follow rules anymore. It's dangerous for the two to be at odds and the commune's way of life to fall apart, so the residents fear a violent solution is near.
