The Battle of the River Plate

As World War II began to unfold, the Royal Navy was engaged in a desperate effort to maintain the Atlantic convoy routes open and the British Isles well-supplied with food and supplies. One of the greatest threats was the large number of surface/commerce raiders that had snuck out of German waters shortly before war was declared. They were primarily used to attack and sink commercial ships, and they were capable of striking anywhere and at any time. They were supplied by axis cargo ships or tankers. 'Admiral Graf Spee' was one such ship, and here is the account of how three lightly equipped Royal Navy cruisers with with 6 and 8 inch guns bravely took on this strong 'pocket battleship,' which was mounted with 11 inch cannons.
