The Nun

In her letters, Suzanne Simonin details the anguish she has endured throughout her life. When she was a young woman, against her will, she was placed in a convent. The dowry necessary for a marriage befitting her rank is too expensive for her parents, so they make the difficult decision to have their daughter enter a convent instead. Suzanne's yearning for independence is unsatisfied despite the fact that the Mother Superior is kind and patient while teaching her the routine of the convent's daily activities. Following the passing of the Mother Superior, Suzanne is put in a position where she must deal with retaliation, humiliation, and harassment at the hands of the new Abbess and the other Sisters. Bigotry and religious extremism have plagued Suzanne's life for a good portion of her adult life. (Berlinale.de)
