The River

It was director Jean Renoir's first time working with color, and the entire film was shot on location in India, making it a visual tour de force. The film is an adaptation of Rumer Godden's novel of the same name, and it does an excellent job of contrasting the growing pains experienced by three young ladies with the unchanging nature of the Bengal river, which serves as the backdrop for their everyday life. The River is a beautiful exploration of the tenuous linkages between fleeting emotions and everlasting creation. This exploration is enriched by Renoir's nuanced understanding and appreciation for India and its people.
