The rich US Bates takes his spoiled son Eric to his department store every year and gives him anything he wants as a gift, even if it's not in the store. An African-American janitor who has made Eric laugh is the one he picks. As Eric's "toy," the man goes through a lot of humiliation. But over time, he shows the lonely boy what it's like to have and be friends.
