Biography

Biography is a television documentary series. Originally, it was a half-hour film series created by David Wolper for CBS from 1961 to 1964 and presented by Mike Wallace. Since 1987, the A&E Network has continued to produce new programs. The previous version contained historical individuals like Helen Keller and Mark Twain, as well as long-deceased entertainers like Will Rogers and John Barrymore. The A&E series has featured Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Plácido Domingo, Freddie Mercury, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Eric Clapton, Pope John Paul II, Gene Tierney, Selena, Diego Rivera, Mao Zedong, and Queen Elizabeth II, as well as fictional characters such as The Phantom, Superman, Hamlet, and Betty Boop. In 1999, A&E broke off the show into its own network, The Biography Channel, because it profiled so many notable individuals. Initially, most of the programs included the life tales of historical luminaries or modern political or social leaders. There were profiles of individuals such as William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Enrico Caruso, and Eva Peron. After a few years, however, the show began to produce episodes about pop culture figures, such as Britney Spears, Al Pacino, Johnny Depp, and Marilyn Manson. This trend away from simply intellectual subject matter has been questioned by some.
