Brass

Brass is a Granada TV comedy-drama for ITV and Channel 4. Brass was a comedy satirizing 1970s working-class historical dramas and American supersoaps like Dallas and Dynasty. Unusually for ITV comedies of the time, there was no laughter track and the humour was dry, using wordplay and subtle pop culture critique. Northern English brass means "money" and "arrogance." The series also imitated Granada's 1977 adaptation of Dickens' Hard Times, which featured Timothy West. The series, developed by John Stevenson and Julian Roach, centered on two feuding families: the rich Hardacres and the destitute, working-class Fairchilds. The Hardacre family was headed by ruthless self-made industrialist Bradley, who championed Thatcherite rhetoric, and his alcoholic aristocratic wife Lady Patience. The Fairchilds were led by "Red" Agnes, who promoted socialist discourse around the mine, mill, and munitions industry, and her doltish, forelock-tugging husband George. Bradley Hardacre's mistress was Agnes.
