Charlemagne

The life of Charlemagne was the subject of the television miniseries Charlemagne, Le Prince à cheval, which aired in 1993. It spans the time from the death of Charlemagne's father, Pepin the Short, in AD 768 to Charlemagne's coronation as the first Holy Roman Emperor on Christmas Day, AD 800. It is broken up into five parts and covers the era from the year AD 768 until AD 800. However, there is a small chronological inaccuracy: in an earlier episode, we see Widukind, the king of the Saxons, surrender and convert to Christianity. This event didn't take place until AD 803, thus the episode is slightly out of place. Clive Donner was in charge of the direction of this show, and the primary source of inspiration for it was a contemporary biography of Charlemagne written by Einhard, who was personally acquainted with Charlemagne.
