Countdown

Countdown is a word and numerical puzzle game program in the United Kingdom. ITV Studios produces it, and Channel 4 airs it. Nick Hewer is the host, with Rachel Riley as an assistant and Susie Dent as the lexicographer. Since its launch on November 2, 1982, it has shown 67 series. Countdown, together with the original French version, Des chiffres et lettres, which has been on French television constantly since 1965, is one of the longest-running game shows in the world, with over 5,000 episodes. For the first 27 years, Countdown was recorded at The Leeds Studios, before moving to Granada Studios in 2009, and subsequently to MediaCityUK in Salford Quays in 2013. Richard Whiteley, who died in June 2005, hosted the show for more than two decades. Des Lynam hosted until the end of 2006, Des O'Connor hosted until the end of 2008, and Jeff Stelling hosted until the end of 2011. Nick Hewer is the current moderator. Carol Vorderman, the show's co-host, had been on the show since the beginning and left in December2008, the same month as O'Connor. Rachel Riley was her replacement. In every episode, a celebrity guest appears for a brief interlude before the first commercial break. In each episode, the two contestants compete in three disciplines: eleven letters rounds, in which they attempt to create the longest word possible from nine randomly selected letters; three numbers rounds, in which they must use arithmetic to reach a random target number from six other numbers; and the conundrum, a buzzer round in which the contestants compete to solve a nine-letter anagram. During the series heats, the winner returns the next day until he or she loses or has eight wins. The best contenders are brought back for the knockout series finals. National media coverage has been given to contestants with outstanding abilities, and the show as a whole is well-known and mocked in British society.
