Empty Nest

Empty Nest is an American sitcom that aired from 1988 to 1995 on NBC. Susan Harris devised the sitcom as an offshoot of The Golden Girls. Throughout its first three seasons, Empty Nest ranked among the top 10 most-watched programs of the year. It was produced in collaboration with Touchstone Television by Witt/Thomas/Harris Productions. Some elements of the show's premise were lifted from the British comedy series Father, Dear Father, which also featured a father living with two children and a huge dog. In contrast to that series, the two daughters in Empty Nest are independent adults and the protagonist is a widower. During its first four seasons, Empty Nest aired on NBC's Saturday night schedule at 9:30 p.m. ET, immediately following The Golden Girls. Two cast members were alums of one of Susan Harris's earlier series, Soap; in Soap, Mulligan was Manoff's father-in-law.
