Princess Ja Myung

Park Min-young and Jung Kyung-ho feature in the 2009 South Korean historical drama Ja Myung Go. From March 9 through July 21, 2009, it ran on SBS on Mondays and Tuesdays at 21:55 for 39 shows. It's based on the Korean folk tale "Prince Hodong and the Princess of Nakrang," which has ties to the collapse of the Nakrang Kingdom in Korea's early history. A legendary drum known as the jamyeonggo, literally "the drum that beats by itself," was said to have the ability to autonomously raise an alert whenever attackers invaded the kingdom. Neighboring nations, especially the warrior state of Goguryeo, were hesitant to attack Nakrang after hearing its self-sounding drum. Hodong, a Goguryeo prince, infiltrated Nakrang with the intention of destroying the drum. He had no idea that he was infatuated with the princess of Nakrang at the time. It was only because she loved him that she eventually cut her country's heart out to betray it. As a result, her country went bankrupt and she was assassinated. Prince Hodong wept as he held her body in his arms, remembering her life and passing. As depicted in the drama, Ja-myung (the hidden sister of the Nakrang Kingdom's princess), a personified drum, is in fact a character in the story. In contrast to Ra-hee, Ja-myung, who survived a murder attempt and now lives as a commoner, was adored by her people as a young princess. In the Goguryeo Kingdom, an enemy of Nakrang, Prince Hodong is split between two women and two nations, and he is forced to make a decision between his love and his duty.
