Sola is a mixed media project that was initially revealed through the prologue of the manga featured in the Japanese manga magazine Dengeki Daioh on December21,2006, published by MediaWorks. The serialization of Chako Abeno's manga finished on February 21, 2008. Broccoli Books has licensed the manga for distribution in North America, with the first volume being released in June 2008. A short drama CD that also served as a prologue to the series was released at Comiket 71 in December2006, and a second drama CD was released in May 2008. Between April and June2007, an anime version aired in Japan; the anime included thirteen episodes, and two extra DVD-exclusive episodes followed. Bandai Entertainment licensed the anime for distribution in North America as a subtitle-only box set containing all fifteen episodes. Sola is pronounced similarly to the Japanese word sora. Sola was selected the greatest anime of 2007 by Japanese anime enthusiasts at the end of 2007.
