The State

The State is a sketch comedy television program that initially aired in the United States on MTV from December17, 1993 until July1, 1995. The show mixed odd characters and situations to create sketches that were popular with its target audience of teenagers. Eleven comedians in their twenties devised, performed, wrote, directed, and edited the show. Several noteworthy characters were created for the show, and their catchphrases briefly entered common usage. Frequently, the cast would address the audience as themselves to advertise false contests or offer parody public service messages. Similar to Monty Python, The State's sketches were occasionally linked in some way: a punchline or picture that concluded one scene frequently served as a segue into the next. On July14,2009, the series was released on DVD after years of legal disputes involving the soundtracks of numerous episodes. The 2007-2008 screenwriters strike has delayed the production of a film starring the original members of the State troupe, and no release date has been given.
