Till Death Us Do Part

From 1965 to 1975, BBC1 broadcasted the groundbreaking British sitcom Till Death Us Do Part. The show began as a Comedy Playhouse pilot and ran for seven seasons until 1975. ITV picked up the sitcom six years later and renamed it Till Death.... The BBC created a sequel, In Sickness and in Health, from 1985 to 1992. Till Death Us Do Part was created by Johnny Speight and focused on the East End Garnett family, who was led by patriarch Alf Garnett, a reactionary white working-class man with racist and anti-socialist sentiments. Dandy Nichols played his long-suffering wife Else, and Una Stubbs played his daughter Rita. Mike Rawlins, Rita's bright but slacker husband, is a socialist. Alf Garnett became a well-known figure in British society, and Mitchell continued to play him on stage and television until Speight died in 1998. Till Death Us Do Part was remade in numerous countries, including Brazil, Germany, and the United States, in addition to the spin-off In Sickness and in Health. Many episodes from the first three series are believed to have been deleted in the late 1960s and early 1970s, as was the policy at the time.
